Zoom Whitening

The popularity of television makeover shows, commercials and magazine ads has resulted in many patients requesting single appointment, light-activated chair side whitening.  What patients don't realize is that while expensive bleaching lights look "high-tech," they function in little more than an impressive marketing tool.

Initially, the "bleaching light" appears to deliver enhanced whitening results, but in reality this is the result of tooth dehydration from the heat generated by the light or the anhydrous bleaching solution.  And although the patient will love the initial whitening result, this temporary whitening will gradually darken or rebound within days as the tooth slowly rehydrates.

Studies show that it is the concentration of bleaching gel used and the length of application -- not the light -- that is responsible for the whitening result in this type of treatment.  Additionally, a single in-office bleaching treatment does not result in maximum whitening.
